Description: 264 pp. Steel-engraved frontispiece portrait & added pictorial title (also a portrait); 4 woodcut maps & plans included in pagination. (8vo) period calf boards, later rebacking. First Edition.Scarce early account of the conquest of California. Compilation of letters and various first-hand accounts of the actions in New Mexico and California, with a short description of the return of General Kearny and his party, June-August, 1847, over the mountains. The work also includes the notes of Captain A.R. Johnston, aide to Kearny and casualty of the Battle of San Pascual. Cowan p.154; Graff 965; Howes C989; Sabin 18208; Wagner-Camp 131.
Condition
Old binding wear but generally repaired, dampstains to inner margin, usually not visible, blindstamp to title pressed flat, cropped close at fore-edge side without text loss; very good.
