Date Published: 1838
Description: US Senate Report 224, 25th Congress, 2nd Session. 24 pp.+ 2 folding maps of the Army Forts at the Arkansas River boundary with Texas. Disbound, removed from larger volume. February 21, 1838.Washington considers expanding the military post of Fort Gibson, established in 1824, or to create a second Fort on or near the Arkansas line. The additional military presence was ostensibly "to prevent internal dissension among the different Indian tribes of that region... and to secure them from the intrusions of white persons, and in the enjoyment of the rights solemnly guaranteed to them in the treaties now in force between them and the United States", but was in actuality, "to afford adequate protection to the citizens of Arkansas" from the forcibly displaced Native Americans from the Trail of Tears. One officer sent out to survey the area was William Whistler, Lt. Colonel of the 7th Infantry (and uncle of the famed artist, James Abbott McNeill Whistler). He co-authored several reports reproduced in this document.
