First Edition.The first American juvenile book on the trans-Mississippi region, giving account of its early explorers, Indian tribes, and other features; the expeditions covered are those of Lewis and Clark (comprising pp. 11-105) and Stephen H. Long, and the captivity among the Indians of Nootka Sound of John Jewitt. The double-page map, copyrighted by S.G. Goodrich, is noted by Wheat as "A copy (much simplified) of 1822 Tanner"; it covers the western half of North America, from southern California to Vancouver Island, including Mexico. Condition
Rubbing and extremity wear to boards, spine worn and tender, front joint cracked; some soiling and foxing within, overall very good, rare in the original boards.
