Title: The United States, from the Latest Authorities
Place Published: Hartford, Connecticut
Publisher:Published by Case, Tiffany & Co.
Date Published: 1850-[1853?]
Description: Lithographed map, hand-colored. 54x101 cm (21¼x39¾"), folded.Quite interesting and surprisingly scarce pre-Gadsden Treaty map of the United States, with many anomalistic boundaries to the states and territories of the west, and the gold regions of California so-colored. Wheat notes it as "largely based on 1845 Fremont, but includes Kearny's Route and gives the Gila as the Southern boundary. An apocryphal 'Old Spanish Military Road from Santa Fe to San Antonio' is given prominence in the Texas region. Fremont's routes are shown, and (between Great Salt Lake and Utah Lake) there appears 'City of the Great Salt Lake Mormon Sett[lement].'... The date given [1850] is approximate." There was also an issue of the map in John Hayward's Gazetteer of the United States, 1853, of which this appearance does not appear to be. OCLC lists both issues, but all are internet resources except a copy of the Hayward issue at the Library of Congress, "imperfect: missing large section from middle of left margin. Sectioned in two, mounted on cloth and laminated." Wheat Transmississippi West, 664.

Condition
Damage at left margin possibly by being removed from a volume, just intruding over outer and inner neat lines in places but not affecting any cartographic features; two tape-repaired tears, one into California, the other the Pacific Ocean, a repair to Great Salt Lake with loss, a few short splits at fold; other more minor wear, very good.
