The facial expression, accentuated by the pursed lips, indicates that his joy springs from his inner self, rather than the outside world. The Buddha’s left hand is folded just near his stomach, and supports a begging bowl on the palm. The right hand makes the gesture of reassurance. His robe ends just above his feet, covering only one shoulder leaving the right one bare. A unique feature of Buddha’s iconography are the exceptionally elongated earlobes. These represent his once royal status, hung as they were with heavy and expensive earrings.
