Additional Information: These bags were used by nomadic tribes to transport salt and by shepherds to provide salt as a food supplement for their sheep and goats. Despite the name, the bags were also used to store fruits and nuts. They are shaped like a bottle with a large body and a narrow mouth to prevent salt from spilling out. All known weaving techniques are used in the production of these bags. This late 19th-early 20th-century mixed media bag of salt is from the region of Balochistan, which stretches between Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan. Sacks of salt are made in only one small area of the world and, as a result, are very similar to each other, despite the ethnic diversity of the nomads who produce them.
