ANGOLA
Chokwe people. Statue of Chibinda Ilunga
Beautiful sculpture representing the mythical hero of the Tshokwe people.
His large and wide hands symbolize the power and the address of the hunter.
The headdress is large and fine the nostrils are dilated, and the musculature is powerful.
Nice figure, in the "Style of the Country of Origin", "Style of Muzumba" and even more precisely
in the sub-style of "The School of Moxico" (taken from the name of a Tshokwe chief living at the east of Muzumba).
A statue of the same style is kept in the Museum of Anthropology of Porto and is illustrated (p 23) and commented (p 24)
by M-L Bastin in "Arts d'Afrique Noire" (see bibliography)
Tshibinda Ilunga, prince and hunter Luba who married a Lunda princess is considered as the most important mythical hero of the Tshokwe.
Founder of the kingdom, he was renowned for his superhuman strength and his supernatural powers
