Description
A SOAPSTONE CARVING OF SHOULAO
17th/18th century, inscribed 1734
Standing with a beaming face, dressed in flowing robes held together with a draw-string which an attendant crane is playfully untying from the right, the chest bare, a ruyi sceptre in the right hand and a long staff in the left against which is nuzzled a tortoise and a deer, all carved from an ochre yellow stone, raised on a porphyry-coloured rectangular base inscribed Ft. A.Ra. AD [1]734.

Condition
There are a few impact marks to the side of the deer and back, none larger than 3mm across. There is a 4mm chip to the edge of the robe on the right below the elbow and smaller chips to the top of the ear and a few other places. There is a possible loss to the end of the staff.
