Provenance: The bird on a branch panel: Nellie Ionides (1883-1962) (by repute)
Acquired from John Sparks Ltd circa 1991

Nellie Ionides (1883-1962) was the daughter of Shell Oil magnate Sir Marcus Samuel and a noted collector of Kangxi porcelain. Members of the Oriental Ceramic Society visited Mr and Mrs Ionides' collection of Chinese porcelain in July 1947. She left Chinese porcelain to the V&A Museum, the British Museum and to the Brighton Pavilion. The embroidered panel was reputedly completed during the Second World War and gifted to John Sparks Ltd of whom Ionides was a long standing client. Its frame, typical of those used by the company, indicates the high standing in which the embroidery was regarded.
Lot to be sold without reserve.
Condition
There is light scuffing and fading to the surface of the embroidery.
