Lakota Sioux John Young Buck Feather Headdress
Lakota Sioux John Young Buck Feather Headdress
Item Details
Description
This is an outstanding full feathered large headdress with feather trailer all accented in beadwork and quillwork from master artist John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians. This piece was sold by NAAC on July 2022 for a total of $9,135 (w/ bp). The piece was handmade by full blood Lakota Sioux Indian John Young Buck (Born 1944-) in the circa late 1900?s to early 2000?s and displayed in a Red Lodge, Montana Ranch. The headdress is signed on the inside of the bonnet, this headdress and the other in this sale are considered to be the last headdress war bonnets ever crafted by John Young Buck. The piece features a thick Buffalo Bison leather bonnet cap which is covered on the front with a wide brow band of glass trade seed beadwork in a geometric pattern in colors of medium green, chalk white and semi-transparent red. The brow band is further accented by two large round medallions on either side comprised of thick Buffalo Indian hide with a fantastic four-point morning star beadwork pattern done in glass trade seed bead colors of red, chalk white, medium green, light blue, cobalt, and yellow. At the center of each medallion hangs a single fringe with six wound glass red white heart Hudson Bay beads and below white Ermine hides. Framing the entire top and integrally running down the entire outsides as a trailer or trail are large white and brown Turkey feathers with plume feathers attached at each end along with horse tail hair strands. The feather ends are wrapped tightly wrapped with a red quill like strand and are tied onto brown hide. Framing the bonnet top along the outside edge in front of the feathers are hand cut long hide fringes in dark brown. The back side of the headdress is lined with beautiful brown and orange plume striped feathers along with a single large Turkey feather tied with five early old multi-layer chevron trade beads with a rawhide four part circle wrapped in original porcupine quill quillwork with colors of yellow, black, red and white; the feather is completely painted down the stem in a yellow blue and black pattern with dots of red and the end wrapped in the red strand. Between the feathers and the fringe is a trailer of dark brown leather hide trailer. The piece is overall well preserved with no visible bead loss, well preserved good condition feathers along the trail, nice soft hide leathers. The top of the bonnet on the back where the brown or orange plume feathers are shows some slight sheading and loss. John Young Buck of the Lakota Sioux Tribe from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is considered to be one of the finest Native American artist of the late 20th to early 21st Century with this being one of if not the finest contemporary headdresses offered for public sale. The piece is paired with a custom black metal telescoping headdress stand which is included in the lot. This piece was sold by NAAC on July 2022 for a total of $9,135 (w/ bp). The headdress measures approximately 52? long or tall by approximately 44? wide without including the horsehair tail fringe ends. The bonnet fits a large men?s head. Mannequin stand not included.
