Beatrix (Beatrice) Sherman, American, 1894-1975, Ten full length silhouettes of Socialites and others, includes Gladys Onderdonk Weekes husband of Bradford Gage Weekes, Mrs. John Morgan Wing (Wife of John Morgan Wing), Alice Pillsbury Paige, Mrs. Dr. Orlando von Bonnewitz, Mr. Avery & Mrs. Avery (New York Family), Mrs. Henry Firth Wood (Wife of Writer), Mimmi S. Hirst, Edith Cornell Smith, Walter S. Wyckoff (Son of Walter Augustus Wyckoff), most autographed, some with stamp, verso with estate stamps, artists studio advertisement and personal artists notations. Biography: Beatrix Sherman styled herself after 19th C. French silhouette artist Auguste Edouart. Sherman, like Edouart, kept books with an extra copy of each sitter's silhouette enabling her to create an extensive personal archive that included both the silhouettes and the sitter's (sic.) autographs. Sherman traveled extensively, established a permanent studio in Manhattan throughout the 1950’s. She attended art classes at The Art Students League, eventually becoming a lifetime member. From an early age, she had begun copyrighting silhouettes of several of the famous people she cut. Sherman’s subjects include all the U.S. Presidents, as well as other politicians, military leaders, writers, royalty, prominent businessmen and women, socialites, athletes, artists, theatre, film actors, producers and directors.
