Description
An English Silver-Hilted Small-Sword Late 17th Century With tapering 18th century blade (some old wear and pitting) of flattened hexagonal section, the forte of flattened oval section etched on both sides with designs of strapwork and foliage including cut ovals, hilt cast and chased with figures and masks within foliage against a chequer-board ground, the spaces alternately plain and punched with a line of minute dots, and comprising side-loop with double calyx at the centre framing a silver plate finely pierced and engraved on each side with scrolling foliage involving a winged demi-figure and a monster's head, lobed rear quillon, knuckle-guard, globular pommel with button, and later cord-bound leather-covered grip bound with twisted iron wire 80.8 cm. blade Footnotes: Provenance Sotheby's London, Modern And Antique Firearms, Cannon, Armour And Edged Weapons, 6 April 1976, lot 98 This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * * VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.
