A signed, first edition copy of "J. B. Murphy: Stormy Petrel of Surgery" by Loyal Davis, M.D. New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1938. 311 pages. Signed and inscribed by Davis to wife Edith Prescott Luckett, mother of Nancy Reagan, on front flyleaf: "To Edith in appreciation of her unfailing encouragement and faith and with my love/ March 1 1938/ Loyal". Featuring a bookplate from "The Private Collection of President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan" on inside front cover. Teal leather boards with gilt detailing to cover and spine; gold painted edges at top of pages. Exhibits moderate wear, including surface rubbing, bumped corners, and slight discoloration to cover; light page toning throughout. Else, very good to near fine.
Dr. Loyal Davis (1896-1982) was a prominent neurosurgeon for Northwestern University and stepfather of First Lady Nancy Reagan. Davis married Reagan's mother, actress Edith Prescott Luckett (1888-1987) in 1929, and legally adopted her teenaged daughter. Throughout his long tenure as a practicing surgeon, Davis would serve as the President of the American College of Surgeons, where he attacked the medical profession's way of training new doctors, in addition to being a longtime editor of the academic journal "Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics".
