A portrait of Taft seated in his Chief Justice robes, signed and inscribed below the image "For my dear friend and classmate of more than half a century, C. Sidney Shepard of New Haven, New York with earnest good wishes and affectionate regard." Also dated by Taft. Photographed by Harris & Ewing. With light mat burn and some silvering at the edges. Boldly signed.

William Howard Taft (1857-1930) served as our 27th president from 1909-1913. He was then appointed to be Chief Justice of the United States by President Harding in 1921, becoming the only person to have held both offices of the presidency and chief justice.
