Early Declaration of Independence Appearing in "The London Magazine - August 1776"
Pamphlet/Booklet

"The London Magazine, Or Gentleman's Monthly Intelligencer" by Henry Mayo including one of the earliest English printings of the Declaration of Independence. London: R. Baldwin, August 1776. Large twelvemo, 393-448pp. The magazine contains an early British printing of the Declaration of Independence, printed on p. 448. Printed with a woodcut engraving of London on the front page, and two engraved plates throughout of Court Beauty, Miss Draper, and British Antiquities. The leaves are lightly toned and the binding is slightly loose. The back few pages have come away from the binding. Text blocks are crooked in some instances. A few spots of soiling in places. Overall very good.

The British publication of the Declaration of Independences is printed in a section entitled "American Affairs", with news reports taken from "The London Gazette." Includes letter excerpts from General Howe, Lieutenant General Clinton, and others. The Declaration text is prefaced by text that reads, "The following is the substance of the declaration of Independency by the representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress assembled, July 4?" Additional commentary reads, "The Congress next recite a number of proceedings detrimental to the colonies, most of which have been already mentioned, at different times, from the resolutions of their several assemblies, with this difference, that they now attribute the oppressions to a great person, instead of the ministry and parliament, as at their former meetings?"
