A rare first edition of "Wellingtons Sieg oder Die Schlacht bei Vittoria." Vienna: Steiner und Comp., February 1816, small 4to. (10.5" x 8.5"), plate mark 2367. Uncut and disbound, with original decorative paper wrappers. Bears occasional pencil notations throughout. Title page is stained, edges display significant wear and fragility, overall good good. Housed in a custom-made blue linen clamshell case with red leather label on cover and title in gilt.

The Battle Symphony, Opus 91, is a 15-minute long orchestral work composed to celebrate Arthur Wellesley Wellington's victory over Joseph Bonaparte in at the Battle of Vittoria, Spain, June 1813. It was original written for the panharmonicon, a mechanical instrument invented by J. N. Maelzel, but when he realized its popularity and money-making potential, Beethoven scored it for orchestra and inserted sounds of cannon and musket-fire. Ironically, this piece became more associated with Wellington's victory at Waterloo than Vittoria!
