Katharine Hepburn ANS, With Bonus Boldly Signed Christmas Card
ANS

Three items inscribed by American actress Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003): an autograph note signed; a signed Christmas card; and an engrossed transmittal envelope, featuring a total of two signatures, both as "Kate." N.d., n.p. Near fine. The largest item, the engrossed envelope, measures 6.375" x 4.75."

The items were sent to Hepburn's friend Laura Dubman Fratti (ca. 1925-1993), the classically trained concert pianist who had mentored Hepburn during the production of the MGM romantic drama "Song of Love" (1947), a movie about the life and work of German composer Robert Schumann. Also mentioned are Laura's husband, the Italian playwright Mario Fratti; and Laura's daughter, Valentina Fratti, who was Hepburn's goddaughter. Hepburn and Dubman Fratti remained friends and correspondents during the decades following their work collaboration.

The lot includes:

1-2. A heavy cream stock card inscribed and signed by Hepburn as: "Love Galore / to Lauri - Valentina / Mario / from Kate." Crisp and near pristine. 6.25" x 4.625." Accompanied by its original transmittal envelope, inscribed by Hepburn as: "Fratti / 145 West 55" on the front cover.

3. A UNICEF holiday card inscribed with a few words by Hepburn, and boldly signed by her as "Kate." The commanding signature measures approximately 2.75" x 1.25" alone. The front cover depicts "Quebec Winter Scene" after Marc-Aur?le Fortin, showing brightly colored houses and churches on a snowy street. The printed season's greetings within the card as well as the copyright information verso are in multiple languages. Light toning, with a minor stain verso, else near fine. 6" x 4.35."

Over Katharine Hepburn's 66-year-long acting career, she would star in dozens of films, television movies, and stage productions. Named the leading female actress of Hollywood Classic Cinema by the American Film Institute, Hepburn also won four Academy Awards (1934's "Morning Glory," 1968's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," 1969's "The Lion in Winter," and 1982's "On Golden Pond") and racked up eight further Oscar nominations. Hepburn was as comfortable in serious theatrical dramas as she was in screwball comedies or period pieces.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
