Description
A pair of French early 19th century cornelian and enamel 'poissarde' earrings, with an oval shallow cabochon cornelian, set to a fine milled bezel. An outer flat section frame of black champleve enamel to hinged gold fittings. French poinçon 1809 -1819 for items with 'garniture' tested as approximately 18ct gold. 23.00 x 9.90 - 10.80mm, 2.63g Poissarde earrings were based on a design originally favoured by French 'fish wives'. The 'poissarde' (fish wives) wore them in base metal, which were then copied by the French aristocracy in gold. Condition Report: N.B. This style of earrings from this date, are put into the ear lobe from the back. Light surface marks. A chip to the edge of one cornelian cabochon, but the cornelians are tallow cut cabochons, and it may be possible to turn this one over. Nibbles and chips to the enamel border under 10x magnification. Fittings in working order. There may have been additional pendant drops at some stage.
