"The second and concluding volume of the biography of George Armstrong Custor begins with the grand parade in Washington D.C. celebrating the end of the Civil War. The book then follow his support of Johnson’s ill-fated reconstruction policy and political machinations that brought on Indian wars and put “Old Curly” at the head of the 7th Cavalry, the most glorious and notorious outfit in the U.S. Army. Custer soon discovered that the Indian Department sold arms to the Indians, profiteers, with official approval, made money hand over fist at the expense of the Army. It was never realy possible to distinguish “friendly” from “hostile” Indians and many didn’t really care. Conditions on the frontier were so severe that soldiers deserted, and many of the generals were drinking..."[from the dust jacket]
