Native American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A pair of gauntlet gloves and a belt sash made from leather with beadwork hand stitched across the surfaces. The belt has a cotton backing and the leather surface has rows of faceted seed beads in geometric patterns. The gauntlets style gloves have a horse rider in a feathered headdress beaded on the cuffs. The United States Cavalry riders wore gauntlet gloves as part of their uniform, introducing the clothing style to Native tribes who turned the gloves into spectacular works of art with painstaking beadwork. Gauntlets were adopted into their regalia and fancy wear for powwows. Size of glove: 12" L x 7" W (30.5 cm x 17.8 cm)
