"Gerome visiting a Pupil's Studio," from Escosura's painting, will give to the non-professional reader a notion of the way in which a painter of old-time subjects approaches his task. The artist is here represented painting from a female model in the dress of Marie de Medicis. Under her feet is spread a tapestry suggesting the rich gifts with which Henri IV wooed his intended bride—the handsome stuffs, Arras tapestries, Cellini vases, which the royal lover lavished by the hands of his ambassador in return for her miniature. A corner or end of the studio, surrounding the figure, is completely fitted up with provisional furniture forming a harmony with the model in the contemplated scene. Here is a bed entirely canopied with antique embroideries; coats-of-arms, ancient Gobelins, and quaint old picture-frames, garnish the walls; a buffet is set out with the vases, statuettes and toys available for the intended incident.
