Description
H.L. Gantt, engineer and management consultant, is best known for his work in the development of scientific management. His
'Gantt charts' were employed on major infrastructure projects including the Hoover Dam and Interstate highway system and continue to be a tool in project and program management. Its value in rationalizing production is indisputable and its impact on the development of mass production techniques is immense. In 1887 Gantt joined Frederick W. Taylor, and together began applying Taylor's scientific management principles to Miidvale Steel, and Bethlehem Steel. The system was groundbreaking & revolutionary and a smashing success.
But it provoked major resentment and opposition from the ranks of Labor.
Early on, Gantt came under the Influence of Thorsten Veblen, and chose to part ways with Frederick W. Taylor because of his emerging belief in a social responsibility for businesess.
Gantt set up the' New Machine', an association which sought to apply the criteria of industrial efficiency to the political process; and together with Marxist engineer, Walter Polakov, he called for socializing industrial production under the control of its managers [workers].
