Description
HARRISON, Benjamin (1833-1901). Secretarial Letter Signed by President Harrison. Executive Mansion Washington, Feby. 10th 1893. Two 8vo pages on two leaves of Executive Mansion mourning stationery (Harrsion’s wife had died from tuberculosis in October, 1892). Addressed: “Hon. R. B. F. Pierce, Indianapolis, Ind.” Each page approximately 8 x 5” (second page with left margin neatly trimmed, each page with one horizontal crease at center, and with associated tears to this crease on each page). Good. In this letter, Harrison answers an inquiry about appointments in the army: “... I cannot make any appointments in the army from civil life as there are not enough vacancies left now, I fear, for the graduating class at West Point in June…” This letter is offered with a first edition of Views of an Ex-President by Harrison, compiled by his wife Mary Lord Harrison (Indianapolis: Bowen-Merrill, 1901), who has inscribed this book to A. T. Volwiler (minor rubbing, else fine).
