Arnaldo Pomodoro (Italian, b.1926). Resin and graphite on cast hand made paper. This is a rare sculpture edition and not a traditional print. Hand-signed in graphite lower right Arnaldo Pomodoro and numbered 8/12. The sheet measures 33 x 24" . The plexi box frame measures 36 x 26".This work was Published by Experimental Printmaking in collaboration with Garner Tullis, San Francisco. Arnaldo Pomodoro and his brother Gio Pomodoro are considered to be two of the greatest modern sculptors in history. His work can be found in the collection of The Vatican, The World Trade Center, National Gallery in Rome among other major museums and corporate collections. Arnaldo Pomodoro, born in 1926 in Italy, is a prominent figure in contemporary Italian sculpture. His journey into the art world began in the mid-1940s, as he delved into the restoration of public buildings in Pesaro while concurrently immersing himself in stage design and honing his skills as a goldsmith. His early artistic endeavors laid the foundation for his future exploration of form and space.In 1954, Pomodoro relocated to Milan, where he found himself amidst a vibrant artistic community, rubbing shoulders with luminaries such as Enrico Baj, Sergio Dangelo, and Lucio Fontana. His debut exhibitions in Florence and Milan in 1954 marked the inception of his artistic career, showcasing his burgeoning talent to the world.Venturing beyond Italian borders, Pomodoro visited New York in 1956 and traversed Europe in 1958, broadening his artistic horizons and forging connections with fellow creatives. His encounters with Alberto Giacometti and Georges Mathieu in Paris in 1959 enriched his artistic dialogue, shaping his evolving aesthetic sensibilities.The early 1960s marked a pivotal period in Pomodoro's artistic evolution as he transitioned to three-dimensional work, delving into the exploration of geometric forms such as spheres, discs, pyramids, and cubes. His sculptures, crafted from burnished bronze, bore the marks of lacerations and excavations, embodying a profound tension between perfection and chaos.Pomodoro's artistic vision extended beyond the confines of traditional gallery spaces, as he embarked on ambitious public installations that altered familiar landscapes with their monumental presence. From the Urbino Cemetery to the Belvedere Fortress in Florence, his sculptural interventions left an indelible mark on the urban fabric, inviting viewers to contemplate the interplay of form and environment.Throughout his illustrious career, Pomodoro's work has garnered international acclaim, earning him prestigious awards such as the Sculpture Prizes at the Biennials of São Paulo and Venice. His monumental Sphere within a Sphere sculptures, ranging from commissioned outdoor pieces to handheld iterations, have become iconic symbols of his artistic oeuvre, captivating audiences around the globe.He is considered to be one of the preeminent sculptors of his generation. Condition
Good to Fair Condition. Loose in frame. A sculptural piece needs to be reattached by an art restoration expert. There are a several chips in bottom right sculptural section. The sheet has no foxing, fading and is otherwise in very good condition. Details photos have been provided of condition issues. Please review photos before bidding. We have removed the artwork from the original plexi box frame to inspect condition.
