Provenance: Dora Maar Estate, Eldred's Auctions, Jessica Leigh Collection, Bedford Art Gallery Brooklyn, New York. Henriette Theodora Markovitch, known as Dora Maar, was a groundbreaking artist whose remarkable talents spanned the mediums of photography, painting, and poetry. Born on November 22, 1907, into a family of diverse heritage in Argentina, Maar later settled in Paris, where she emerged as one of the most significant female artists of her generation. Maar's artistic journey began in Paris, where she pursued formal training at prestigious institutions such as the Central Union of Decorative Arts, the School of Photography, École des Beaux-Arts, and the Académie Julian. She frequented artistic workshops and encountered fellow surrealist Jacqueline Lamba, forging connections that would shape her artistic vision. Venturing beyond Paris, Maar embarked on photographic expeditions to Barcelona and London, capturing the social upheaval wrought by the economic depression following the Wall Street Crash of 1929. Armed with her camera, she documented the human experience with empathy and insight, laying the groundwork for her future artistic endeavors. In 1935, Maar's life took a transformative turn when she crossed paths with Pablo Picasso. Their ensuing relationship blossomed into a profound artistic collaboration, with Maar serving as both muse and confidante to Picasso. She immersed herself in his creative process, documenting the evolution of his monumental masterpiece, "Guernica," and inspiring his exploration of innovative techniques.Maar's legacy transcends her association with Picasso, as she emerged as a formidable artist in her own right. Her pioneering contributions to surrealism and her bold experimentation with form and composition. Permanent Museum Collections include, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, The MoMA, NY, The Tate Modern, The Getty Museum, Center Pompidou, Paris, The National Gallery of Art, D.C., the SFMOMA, The Morgan Library, and numerous international collections.
