Birney Imes: Mississippi Series Chromogenic Print. Photograph. Sight; height: 13 3/4 in x width: 17 1/8 in. Framed 24 3/4 in x 20 3/4". Provenance: Distinguished corporate collection, Minnesota. Revere Auctions, Jessica Leigh Collection, Bedford Art Gallery, Brooklyn New York. Birney Imes (b. 1951 in Columbus, Mississippi) is a photographer whose work delves into the essence of the Mississippi Delta, capturing its people, places, and cultural tapestry. Imes graduated with a degree in History from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1973. His journey into the realm of photography began shortly after graduation, where he embarked on a self-taught exploration of the art and craft. Imes's photographic oeuvre has garnered international recognition, with his works finding homes in esteemed collections such as The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, among numerous others in both museum and private spheres. Throughout his career, Imes's lens has been trained on the nuances of Mississippi Delta life, capturing moments that are at once intimate and evocative. His photographs have been featured in solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including prominent venues like The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In 1991, University Press of Mississippi published Imes's first book, "Juke Joint," followed by "Whispering Pines" in 1994. That same year saw the publication of "Partial to Home" by Smithsonian Press, a collection showcasing his black and white work. Imes's distinctive photographic style has earned accolades from critics and viewers alike, with acclaimed author Robert Ford praising the sensation his photographs evoke, inviting viewers into seemingly secret and forbidden realms of Mississippi Delta life. Imes's contributions to the photographic landscape extend beyond gallery walls; his work is also held in public collections such as the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego. His published works, including "Whispering Pines" (1994), "Partial to Home" (1994), and "Juke Joint" (1990), continue to resonate with audiences, offering glimpses into the rich tapestry of Southern culture and heritage.
