Description
This is a very old and weathered Teke Buti idol. Buti are named after and identified as specific male ancestors and located in a shrine to one’s deceased family members. Individual male devotees use buti figures to address a variety of personal concerns with help from the spirit world. This Idol has a very well weathered surface patina suggesting years of traditional use. The reddish mineral color around the central torso was at one time covered with some sort of textile around the torso and bundle which has some old rust colored organic material as well as other unknown magic material in the cavity. The magic idol measures 15.5 inches tall. Teke peoples, Congo, central Africa. Provenance: A Private New Jersey Collection.
