Nicolaas Jarry, Zeeland privateer. Engraver: Pieter Willem van Megen (1750-1785) and Mathias de Sallieth (1749-1791). Artist: after Jacobus Perkois (Dutch, Middelburg 1756–1804 Middelburg). Title: Nicolaas Jarry Capitein op het vlissingsche Kaper schip de Vlissinger. Description: Nicolaas Jarry as a privateer captain employed by the Nortier company in Vlissingen. Jarry holds a ship's horn in one hand and a saber in the other. In the background two ships at sea. Production date: 1782. Size: 24,7x35 cms Condition: good. Background: Nicolaas Jarry took part as a Zeeland privateer in the Fourth English War (1780-1784). The Republic of the United Netherlands then fought with France against the strong naval power of England. The successes of the Zeeland privateers were sung in the 'Kaperslied' by the Zeeland poet Jacobus Bellamy. Of all the privateer ships, he called the Vlissinger 'the owner', which 'makes the best loot'. This was the fast sailing cutter of the Frenchman Nicolaas Jarry, who sailed for the Zeeland company Nortier.; Nicolaas Jarry, Zeeland privateer.
