SID MAURER (1926-2017). Million Dollar Bill, 20" x 40" mixed media with collage, digital print and paint on wood board, signed on the left side. Not numbered. Unframed. Deacessioned from UCLA. We note that the bill portion of this work is collage. Condition: Board is fairly thin and I can see two horizontal crack lines on the back that have not gone through to the front, slight edge wear and edge tip chips, unframed. I believe it would be a good idea to have the piece framed by a professional framer that could possibly put an extra piece of backing in the back of the frame to keep the piece safe. We note in our research that some of the mixed media pieces are described by sellers as limited edition prints. Therefore, this piece could be a limited edition but it is signed and not numbered.
Born in 1926, Maurer became an assistant art director at Columbia Records in New York City, designing album covers and promotional material for popular artists. For a while, Andy Warhol was his colleague, and when Andy left, Maurer continued to expand his commercial drawing, working for the music industry.
In the mid-sixties his paintings began to appear in galleries in New York, Los Angeles, and Paris, France, and in the early nineties he decided to fully devote his time to painting, making Atlanta, Georgia his home base.
Since then his work has been shown at the Georgia Capitol, the Carnegie Museum in Oxnard, California, the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles, and others. He has fulfilled commissions for ESPN and MotorSport, as well as prominent individuals from music and film.
He creates large mixed-media pieces, often in series, such as Sports Legends, Movie Stars, and Famous Musicians. His series Vanishing Georgia deals with historical events in the history of the southern state of Georgia. America, America and The Great Americans were created after 9/11 as a reaction to the events.
"His style combines bold, dynamic colors and strokes with painstaking layouts and typographical elements.
