On 21 May 1961, a mass meeting was held at the African American First Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL, in honor of the Freedom Riders, but a rioting mob held the attendees prisoner within the building.

Scenes/captions include: "Homeward Bound - National Guardsmen button up the tailgate of a military truck as they began taking Negroes home from the beleaguered church in Montgomery, Alabama, early today," 22 May 1961. -- "Joe Smelley, assistant director of the Alabama Highway Patrol, reads newspaper which headlines 'City under Martial Law.' Gov.
