[CIVIL RIGHTS]. A group of 3 press photographs documenting the aftermath of a riot protesting a rally held in support of the Freedom Riders at the First Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL. May 1961.

3 silver gelatin photographs, approx. 10 x 8 in. or smaller (edge/corner wear to each, some cropped). Each with caption on recto or verso and cropping notes. Ink stamps and newspaper clippings on verso.

On 21 May 1961, a mass meeting was held at the African American First Baptist Church in Montgomery, AL, in honor of the Freedom Riders, but a rioting mob held the attendees prisoner within the building.

Scenes/captions include: "Homeward Bound - National Guardsmen button up the tailgate of a military truck as they began taking Negroes home from the beleaguered church in Montgomery, Alabama, early today," 22 May 1961. -- "Joe Smelley, assistant director of the Alabama Highway Patrol, reads newspaper which headlines 'City under Martial Law.' Gov. John Patterson called out the National Guard late 5/21 after renewed violence broke out at the Negro First Baptist Church, shown in background.," 22 May 1961 (small chip near top right corner of print). -- "Remaining in church under orders for their own safety, Negroes wait in pews for mob's fury to subside. They had attended integration rally," 24 May 1961.
