Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a nicely-dressed child, with the hand of an African American subject visibly grasping the child's hand.
Seated portrait of a child wearing a plaid dress and cape, fur trimmings, and a hat. To the viewer's left, a darker colored hand can be seen holding onto the hand of the child, as if to encourage stillness. (Tarnishing around edges, few minor spots; resealed 2023, original seals included in case.) Housed in a pressed paper case.
A slip of paper behind image identifies the child as "Samuel A. Coburn son of Samuel A."
