Description
[AFRICAN AMERICANA - EDUCATION]. A group of 3 photographs, incl. tintype and CDVs of teacher Fannie Langford and formerly enslaved students at The Hooper School on the Old Fort Plantation, Beaufort, SC.

3 photographs, including the following: 2 CDVs on cardstock mounts, each with credit on verso to Hubbard & Mix, Beaufort, SC (toning, light soiling, mild edge wear). The first shows instructor Fannie Langford teaching formerly enslaved children how to read and write at the first school for the formerly enslaved in South Carolina, the Hooper School on the Old Fort Plantation in Beaufort, SC, Port Royal Island. The second carte is signed on verso, “Fannie Langford, Hooper School, Old Fort Plantation, Beaufort, SC Port Royal Island.” Written on bottom recto “My favorite pupil Uncle Smart Washington 71 yrs.” -- Anonymous tintype believed to show Fannie Langford, 3 3/4 x 2 1/2 in. (some surface mottling, discoloration near bottom edge of plate).

Together, an important trio of photographs of female instructor Fannie Langford and the formerly enslaved peoples that she taught at the Hooper School on the Old Fort Plantation, which later came to be known as Smith's plantation in Beaufort County, South Carolina. Fannie Langford was likely one of the female instructors sent by missionary groups to South Carolina to educate the Freedmen.
