David Hurn (b.1934) MINER'S FORTNIGHT, BARRY ISLAND, WALES, 1973. Vintage silver gelatin print, image size 200 x 300mm, sheet size 305 x 403mm, signed by the photographer in pencil lower right margin recto. The present print was included in Wales Black and White - an exhibition of photographs taken between 1973-1974 by David Hurn, the result of the British Arts Council's first Commission Award to an eminent photographer. The Arts Council detailed the project in their 1974 report: "David Hurn's continuing project of recording life in Wales was represented by a first selection of forty finished prints against a background which demonstrated, through 400 marked-up contact sheets and small trial prints, the photographer's method of working and of arriving at his final choice." This project toured the UK, and was exhibited at both the Welsh National Museum and The Photographers' Gallery, London.
