"JOHN ADAMS. President of the United States" With Gen. George Washington, Historical Liverpool Creamware Bowl
c. 1797 Federal Period, Liverpool Creamware Bowl, Important & Extremely Rare Decorative Historical Transfers of "JOHN ADAMS. President of the United States" plus Two Transfers of General George Washington and Revolutionary War Scene with Soldiers and a Sailing Ship, Choice Extremely Fine.
An important President JOHN ADAMS decorative Pitcher, certainly lacking in most Historical Presidential and Political collections. This rare "JOHN ADAMS. President of the United States" titled Transfer is among three additional black transfers decorating the outer surfaces of this exceptional historic large size Bowl. This item was produced for export sale in America for both its actual function and use while providing a decorative Historical American Patriotic presentation in its display.
This Historical Liverpool Creamware bowl, measures about 11" wide x 4.75" deep, with some slight interior wear to the sides and naturally being somewhat more prominent from use at the bottom. All of the rim edges both at top and bottom are smooth, sharp and hard. The exterior transfers remain fresh, sharp deep black and bold. The interior central transfer image, located at bottom center of this bowl, is listed as W.29 on page 202 of "Anglo-American Ceramics, Part I," by Armand. It depicts of Bust of George Washington surrounded by Stars representing the then existing 15 States.
JOHN ADAMS served as the Second President of the United States (1797-1801), after serving as the First Vice President under President George Washington. John Adams was a famous historical American lawyer renowned for defending the British Soldiers involved in the "Boston Massacre", author, statesman, and diplomat. Adams was a Founding Father was a Revolutionary War advocate and Continental Congress Member, being a leader of American Independence from Great Britain. Around the exterior of the Bowl are four additional transfers:
1. General George Washington image of the General on his horse, listed as W.11 on page 196 of Armand.
2. One of a Revolutionary War Soldier, with an inscription reading: "By Virtue and Valour, We Have Freed our Country, Extended our Commerce and Laid the Foundation of a Great Empire." (This is similar but not identical to illustration V.3 on page 191 of Armand.)
3. The third depicts John Adams, as President of the United States and is similar to A.4 on page 61 of Armand.
4. The fourth transfer shows Two Women working a field, with an Inn located in the background, an image which is Unlisted in Armand.
An extremely rare JOHN ADAMS Bowl, as President of the United States. Liverpool Creamware both depicting and with a legend reading: "JOHN ADAMS. President of the United States" is rarely ever offered.
