Ch’uspa Ceremonial Coca Bag, Belen, Department of Oruro, Late 18th C. to early 19th C. Alpaca warp and weft. Natural dyes. Complete with the original strap. A ch’uspa is a coca bag which men use to hold coca leaves, a stimulant that has been chewed in the Andes for thousands of years, Coca is an important component in all social interaction and ritual, work, and medicinal purposes. This bag features a center band of Aymara iconography in three color complementary warp weave. The light olive-green color connotes an older tradition. Size: 11'' x 10'' (28 x 25 cm).
