"ANTIQUE JACQUARD WOVEN COVERLET 1850'S INDIGO BLUE & WHITE OVERSHOT, CENTER SEAM

A deep indigo blue and white 19th century New York /Pa jacquard coverlet circa 1850s and is a overshot winter coverlet. This coverlet is medium weight and not very thick. It has soft fibers and firm hand to the fibers, made of natural undyed cotton and indigo blue wool.

CONDITION

This unsigned coverlet was stored and it is in fair/good original condition with no fading, brown oxidation storage spots and lots of wear, as seen in photos, no seam separation in center seam, no insect damage, no color bleeding, storage odors, and no repairs. Brown oxidation spots on white fringes. There is a 10"" rip at top of coverlet as pictured. Sometime in its life the center seam wads taken apart and crudely put together with a raised seam on one side. This would be an easy fix to repair and flatten the seam so it is not raised.

This coverlet has added fringes on three side, added at a later date and not original to the coverlet. Has an area of hand-turned rolled edge at each end and an area partially let out with no hem. The pattern on one side is reversed on the other in color.

Probably never having been washed, it was most likely used on special occasions and spent most of its life stored to be handed down to the next generation. The fiber is strong and still has great body.

Good for its age. Like most home woven coverlets from this time period, it is done in two halves and joined together with a center seam. Overall threads are in sturdy and strong condition, not weak at all.

Measures 89"" x 70"" with an additional 4"" white fringe.
