Cartographer: John Speed Title: A New and Accurat Map of the World Drawne According to ye Truest Descriptions Latest Discoveries & Best Observations yt have beene Made by English or Strangers. 1651. Subject: World Published: London Date: 1651 Description: Speed, one of the most famous English mapmakers, produced this double hemispherical carte-…-figures with celestial insets for his Prospect atlas, which was first published in 1627. In addition to personifications of the four Classical elements and scientific illustrations showing astronomical concepts such as the eclipses of the Sun and Moon, the composition incorporates medallion engravings of the discoverers Cavendish, Drake, Magellan, and van Noort. The map shows California as an island, with much of the Pacific Northwest left blank. The Great Lakes are missing, and the Atlantic is labeled as ''The Westerne Ocean.'' Engraved by A. Goos. Text in English on verso. Size: Approx. 15.6'' x 20.5'' (39.5 x 52 cm) Color: Hand color outline map with full color illustrations Condition: Center fold; map is lightly toned, with a 45ø crease to the lower right-hand corner; in margin, minor loss to the bottom edge near the same corner.
