Rare black Regency TR-1 Transistor radio, 1950's, housed in a book-form case and presented by Michael Todd (American, 1909-1958, film and theatre producer, former husband of Elizabeth Taylor) as gifts to commemorate his 1956 film 'Around the World in 80 Days' (after the original book written in 1873 by French writer Jules Verne, 1828-1905), serial number 1179741, cap code or date covered by 1960 repair tag, lacking vol dot, retaining original paper label as pictured, interior with gilt embossed presentation to Shirley Thomas (Shirley Thomas Perkins, American, 1920- 2005, see note below) above Michael Todd's name, some wear to gilding, overall, radio: 5"h, 3"w, 1.25"d, overall: 5.75"h, 4.25"w, 2"d, 1lb total **Note: The TR-1 was the first portable and commercially-sold transistor radio manufactured by the Regency Division of Industrial Development Engineering Associates (I.D.E.A.). These scarce 'Mike Todd' versions were given to actors and family friends including Arthur Miller, Shirley MacLaine, Lou Berg, Bill Shawn, Frank Quinn, Ted Patrick and Jordan Ramin. The film 'Around the World in 80 Days' was nominated for a number of Academy Awards and won several including Best Picture and Best Film Editing. Michael Todd continued in the film industry until his untimely death in 1958 due to a plane crash. The recipient of this radio book, Shirley Thomas, was a professor at the University of Southern California, author, and radio/television actress, writer, and producer. Thomas was active in the Hollywood scene as a broadcaster and interviewer for a number of decades. She also did broadcasting for the New Year's Day Rose Parade for CBS and for the Voice of America, the official external broadcast institution for the United States federal government. Eventually, she left her broadcasting career to explore the Aerospace industry. She is praised for her eight-volume series on astronauts, "Men of Space" published in the 1960's.
