Description
Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, Ca. 664 - 30 BC. A mummified ibis, carefully wrapped in layers of linen with traces of resinous coating. The elongated form preserves the body?s outline, with stylised features painted or modelled on the wrappings. Such mummies were dedicated in temples, symbolising devotion and sustaining the cult of the gods. They reflect both ritual piety and the economic scale of animal cults in the later phases of Egyptian religion.
