MILITARY CARBINE. Cal 52. S# 11974. Standard brass mounted configuration, 37.5" overall, 21.5" barrel, "SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN" on top flat rear a barrel band, adjustable long range rear sight, brass blade front sight, "SHARPS /PATENT / 1852" on lock, "SHARPS / PATENT / 1848" on back of frame and S# on tang. Barrel has small "M" inspection at left breech. "LKD" soldier's initials carved on left butt stock. Consecutive S# 11975 is found in National Archives records re-issued to Co. C, 19th PA Cavalry, S#s 11972 & 11977 are found in 1864 records in the 1st Maryland Cavalry. "MD" is scratched into toolbox lid. CONDITION: very good overall, all original and matching, honest well used example showing abrasions from saddle wear. Iron overall is cleaned toned to mottled brown/bright patina. Mechanics are fine including Maynard capping device, crisp bright discernible rifling. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of John "Jack" Dhooghe. (01-28236/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
