Description
Chinese Cast Iron Luduan Censer, Ming Dynasty. Finely cast iron luduan‑form censer dating to the Ming Dynasty, the mythical beast rendered with strong sculptural presence and a hinged head opening for use as a functional temple burner. Traces of original polychrome paint remain, offering a rare glimpse of its early decorative scheme. An impressed underside stamp is present but now illegible due to age and oxidation. Cast‑iron Ming luduan censers retaining pigment are increasingly scarce. Size: 4 1/2w x 9 1/2h Provenance: Private Midwestern collection; acquired before 2000.
Condition
Losses to original polychrome paint; pitting and surface wear consistent with age and material; overall structurally sound.
