Description
A vintage reproduction print of antique Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, from his series, "The Fifty-three Stations of the TÅkaidÅ Road".
Thirty-Fifth station: Goyu. In the title block: "Women Who Stop Travelers". The maritornes (older unattractive women) described by the author of "Journey on My Knees Along the Tokaido" harpoon travelers by their bundles or sleeves and lure them toward the inn. On the right, a young geisha goes to work. In the entrance of the inn, a traveler undoes his calfskin to wash his feet. Behind the leaning woman are inscribed four large characters: "Printing board by Takenouchi"; on the right, three vertical boards suspended on which are inscribed: "Drawing by Ichiryusai", Hiroshige's brush name, which he adopted at the beginning of 1832, then the name of "the printer Byoei" and that of the engraver which is illegible.
