Description
Very unusual 19th century wooden plaque with ceramic inlays depicting Kinko sennin riding a huge carp. According to a Chinese legend Daoist sage (Sennin) Qin Gao (Kinko) spent the first 200 years of his life painting fish, and had such respect for them that he would never harm or eat them. The Dragon Lord of the river kingdom sent a giant fish to invite him to come and be his guest, and Kinko rode the fish under the water into the river kingdom. Beautiful matsu (pine) board, wonderful quality work with multiple colored enamels, great stern face, in excellent condition. Was collected by William H. Smith (1853-1923), donated to the Framingham History Center, Massachusetts, where it has been part of the collection since 1923, and deaccessioned in 2017. Two metal loops on the top with old silk cord for hanging. Two inlaid ceramic seals reading RYU-UN and ENKE GYO (by Enke). Size 16 x 9.5 inches, thickness 3/4 inches.
