Late 18th to early 19th century good size kokutan (ebony) netsuke of a standing foreigner sarumawashi (traveling entertainer with trained monkey) wearing long robe and pants, holding a bamboo stick in his hand, while his pet climbed onto his shoulder. Strong early carving, nice smirking face, beautiful patina with characteristic ebony sheen, large deep himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time. Excellently balanced, stands on its own. Signed SADAKOKU on the back. Height 10.6 cm (4.17 inches)
