19th century boxwood netsuke of a drunken shojo falling asleep, its face on its arms, long hair streaming along its shoulders. Shojo are mythical creatures living near the sea, and are particularly fond of sake. Wonderfully captured mood of the scene, wonderful quiet face, excellent depiction of various textile patterns (especially cloud design on its undergarment, wonderful staining, beautiful rich patina. Signed TADATOSHI in ukibori (raised characters) in rectangular reserve on the bottom - this very important carver, excellent artist, founder of the Tada school is listed in NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 1062. Fantastic sculpture by the master carver. Length 1.72 inches
