Description
19th century wooden netsuke of a man under a semi-folded umbrella, with a temple lantern in his hands. The subject is that of Ki no Tsurayuki, who rode on horseback through a sacred area without dismounting, thus displeasing the gods, who caused a violent storm to arise. The storm did not abate until Tsurayuki, disguised as a temple servant, read a poem that pleased them. Wonderful early carving, bold design, spirited treatment of the subject. Beautiful wear and patina. Height 2.5 inches.
