19th century boxwood netsuke of a seated Nio pulling at his zori (straw sandal) that he holds with his toes. Rather irreverent depiction of a Nio (also called Kongōrikishi) - one of the wrathful guardians of the Buddha. Nio are dharmapala manifestations of the bodhisattva Vajrapani, the oldest and most powerful of the Mahayana Buddhist pantheon. Nicely carved, wonderful face, beautifully defined muscular limbs, very good patina. Height 1.65 inches.
