Description
Late 19th century Japanese scroll painting in ink and colors on silk depicting the sun rising above the sea over Meoto Iwa (the Wedded or Married Couple Rocks) - two rocky stacks in the sea off Futami, Mie Prefecture, Japan. They are joined by a shimenawa (lengths of rice straw rope used for ritual purification in the Shinto religion) and are considered sacred by worshippers at the neighboring Futami Okitama Shrine. According to Shinto, the rocks represent the union of the creator of kami, Izanagi and Izanami. Superb quality painting, beautifully captured quiet mood of the scene, elegant composition, great use of color. Signed and sealed by Mori Kansai (1814-1894). Later silk brocade mounts, in great condition. Painting size 41 x 16 inches, scroll size 74 x 20.5 inches.
