Late 18th century wooden netsuke of a seated mask carver working on a theatrical mask of Hyottoko (perplexed peasant) with carver’s excellent face twisted in concentration and thus mimicking the contorted expression of the mask that he is carving. Great quality work, wonderful spectacles held by straps around his ears. Beautiful wear and patina, differently sized deep himotoshi. Signed TOMAN on the bottom - this excellent and rare artist is listed on p. 1108 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Height 1.4 inches.
