She wandered through the fields above my house a few years ago. The snow was melting, and she was enjoying the sun. Loitering. She gave me time to grab my nice camera and rush back to take a few photos with my long lens. As I was editing, I realized she was special.

I'd never seen a moose as old as her. Her eyes were blue and watery, her muscles were gone, and spurts of gray hair shimmered in the light.

I thought about her tenacity. I thought of how many calves she'd given birth to and protected. I thought about her will to live through another Wyoming winter. She symbolizes the tough, quiet, and unwavering work of all matriarchs in our society.
